April 21:
Tomorrow will be my last day on the job I have had for seventeen years. Today, I learned that my van has “essentially unrepairable engine wear” and will need to be replaced. In the grand scheme of things, it’s pretty trivial, and I feel kind of guilty for complaining. But it still hurts.

Puppy, Canary, Torture

April 14: I kicked a puppy today.
I didn’t mean to; I was walking across a parking lot when a little black bundle of muscle and energy dashed out and started playing slalom with my feet. I tried to step carefully, but I didn’t come to a full stop, and he managed catch my toe and took a pretty good hit. He ran back to the nearest building, but kept pacing me. After about ten more steps, I turned to face him and crouched; he came running out to make friends. I suspect that he was a pit bull; he was about the size of an adult dachshund. I played with him for a minute or two, and then stood up, and he headed back home. But it fits my image better to say I kicked a puppy…

March 27: Catching up on archived television over lunch, watching the first episode of “Legends of Tomorrow”, finally. It’s a silly superhero show, but it has already established that it has a soul. How? By showing three high end demi-meta thugs (White Canary, Captain Cold, and Heat Wave, if it matters) dealing with a grabby jerk with friends in a 1975 biker bar while Toni Tennille sings “Love Will Keep Us Together” on the jukebox. Magic!
