Movies and odds and ends:

“Death Wish” is thinkier than I expected it to be, but I expected it to be utterly brain dead, so that is a low bar. I was in a mood for the movie the trailers promised, and it delivered.

“Love, Simon” is funny and touching and sweet and pretty much perfect. It deals with difficult subject matter with humor, sensitivity, and deftness. This is the movie that actually deserves all of the nice things they said about, “Lady Bird” (which was pretty much unwatchable).

“Tomb Raider” is a first rate action movie that happens to star a woman. It is better than most examples of the breed, and is pretty close to being the movie that deserves the accolades delivered to “Wonder Woman”.

“Gringo” is an over the top caper movie full of talented actors delivering great performances as REALLY AWFUL people. If you can get past that, and it is NOT easy, this movie is a lot of fun.

“Midnight Sun” is a by the numbers tear jerker with a great cast and good dialog, but a brain damaged script. It succeeds, to the extent that it does, because the form itself is just that strong, if you are susceptible to such things. We are, at least to some extent.

In other news… Not much is new. I am still grinding out about 600 words a day on the current writing project, which amazes me, but is a lot of fun.
