Movies, mostly…

“Book Club” is a geriatric romantic ensemble comedy with a great cast and a pretty good script. We enjoyed it a great deal.

“Deadpool 2” is more of the same. The jokes MIGHT be slightly better, the pacing is DEFINITELY somewhat worse, the vulgarity is pretty much the same, and new (to film, anyway) character Domino steals every scene she is in. If you liked the first “Deadpool” (and we did), you will like this one.

“Solo: A Star Wars Story” is kind of lame. The director, writers, and cast have all turned in good work elsewhere (though Emilia Clarke just doesn’t have the BITE that the role calls for), and it seems that the main thing wrong with this movie is that everyone involved with the production is so afraid of the enormous “Star Wars” fan base that there was no room left for ANYTHING to sparkle. I went in expecting, based on the trailers, a decent space fantasy caper movie, and didn’t get it.

And while we are at it… We’re caught up on current television, and decided to do a bit of exploring of the Great Cloud Catalog. We found a 2014 thing called “Mythica: A Quest for Heroes” which is a low-budget fantasy based on RPG tropes. There’s nothing special about it, but it is still fun, and probably more worth re-watching than “Solo”.

In other news… Routine things have been going on. I mowed the front lawn for the second time this year, had brake work done on the van, and spent another miserable morning up under the eaves dealing with leaks.

I am still hacking at the full time writer thing; “Fiddler’s Rose” is nomimally half done, and I am currently two days ahead of pace (though not long ago I was seven days ahead, and will likely be dead even by Saturday. Such is life.)
