Movies:

“Mama Mia! Here We Go Again” is a phoned-in sequel to a movie that left no room, or more importantly, top-line Abba songs, for a sequel. It isn’t awful, but it isn’t very good, either.

“Skyscraper” is a by-the-numbers disaster movie. If you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you will like. And we do, mostly. Mostly.

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” is the sixth movie in this franchise. Given how big the first movie was, they have MOSTLY avoided the “bigger, better, more” mania that cripples many long running series, at least when Tom Cruise’s desire to die in front of a camera is discounted. In this case, there was an insane helicopter sequence that could have been done safer, cheaper, and just as convincingly with CGI, and it is unlikely that cost of the high risk version will be justified at the box office. (The film will be a huge hit in any case.) Once again, though, if you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you will like. We do.

“Christopher Robin” is the sort of movie that is regarded as horror in the Land of the Velveteen Rabbit. It’s supposed to be heartwarming and have a moral, which is never a good thing, and it’s kind of mushy in the middle. On the other hand, if you were raised on Milne and Shepard (pre-Disney), seeing those creatures walking around and talking pretty much pays the freight on everything else.
